Why leaves are worth clearing
A layer of wet leaves left on a lawn blocks out the light and holds damp against the grass, which is how yellow patches and moss get started. On stone paths, steps and patios, wet leaves turn slippery fast, and piled up against walls and fences they give slugs somewhere to hide.
Clearing through the autumn
Leaves don't all come down at once, especially where there are big trees nearby, so a single clear once most have fallen or a few visits through the autumn both work. Leaf clearing covers lawns, paths, patios, drives and the fronts of borders, raking and gathering the leaves so the garden is left clear and safe underfoot. It also fits neatly alongside the last mow and hedge trim of the year.
